Let’s proclaim End Day as a new global Christmas.
By RAJA EL FANI
In this great cultural transition of a society in which we aspire to transcendent common desires, planetary indeed, new happenings are established that are made sense of universally. They are mostly produced through the most intense emotion: fear; but hysteria mustn’t be taken as the real issue at the heart of this social phenomenon.
There is a growing need to make sense of Unity, to celebrate it as a standard celebration; precisely one that awakens and stokes the flame of national sentiment. That’s why End Days could seriously replace Christmas. The end of the world, for which a countdown was begun a few days from the fateful date, is an episode which beckons analysis.
Nowadays we experience globalism with tension due to the impression of immediacy derived from New Media. Superstition and Religion, (much disparaged), are the popular ways to experience the immanence of events that, more frequently than we think, defy human understanding. But even pure conjecture, astronomic gossip, are part of the whole edifice it takes to get a taste of exciting global culture.
Mass participation in empty theories, however, does not affect most modern rituals. In fact, Pope Ratzinger aka @Pontifex has just inaugurated Twitter, on 12/12/12 in perfect tautological consistency. While, also on Twitter of course, the hashtag #apocalypse is now a showcase for the sophistry of breaking news, as well as an explanation of every minor coincidence. It’s a whim that ignores the disapproval of scientists represented by F.A.Q. especially set up on the site of NASA.
Apocalyptic desire has broken the barrier of imagination since 9/11 and finally encroached on reality. It is along the same lines that Defence policy makes a show of wars and spectacular offensive today. The even more devastating atomic bomb does not reach the public imagination with the same impact because it lacks visibility, objectivity, and its iconic power stops at the sublime impalpable mushroom of the military archives.
The business of natural disasters has yielded the search for shocking images capable of almost physical involvement. Even Cinema meshes with increasingly realistic representations. National Geographic Channel has launched a competition to reward the best survivalist with a mobile bunker, in a half-scientific reality show that discloses the techniques of extreme training, once reserved for astronauts. Hard to admit but it’s the same assumption that has led the UN to create the portal Disaster Risk Reduction. The new ingredients to attract public attention describe a preventive daily, a frantic era that has exploited apprehension for more or less noble grounds, from techno music to no-stop systems.
Global culture is not determined in the total feeling, otherwise we risk re-living human folly on a global scale; the root of Fascism, still lurking under regimes and democracies. Global culture refers to its true self through these expressions of Ending that exhaust all the complexity of life in fatality. In fact, with so much diversity and variety in life, only death is a certainty.
Therefore, the apocalypse, a big purifying reset function, symbolizes an immediate (and easy) shared consciousness. This does not yet amount to a sixth sense but a public act would be enough to restore collective expression. At last, with technology we’re now able to get a superhuman perception of reality, (not including our biological evolution, nor practical, human interpretations of this power). A shortcut with no common solutions.
